Humber River Hospital

Improving Care Through Communication

Humber River Hospital in Toronto set out to expand a COVID tracking app to support patients with cancer, diabetes, and other conditions. Ollon built a "Circle of Care" messaging platform with peer support groups, instant care plan access, and a virtual queue system. The virtual queue reduced wait times, letting patients step away, while care teams get quick access to patient records.

In response to Covid-19, Humber River Hospital's internal dev team developed an app, Healix, to track Covid-positive patient information, streamline processes, and allow for more effective communication between patients and care team members.

Ollon was brought in to enhance the existing team to elevate the app's functionality and accommodate a fast paced approach to advancing patient care in other areas, such as cancer and diabetes, among many others.

The creation of "Circle of Care" provides patients with easily accessible peer support groups while access to care plans provide both patients and care support teams with quick access to patient records and results.

Our Expertise in Action

Scalable Applications and Secure APIs

During COVID, Humber River Hospital's internal team built Healix, a platform to track COVID positive patients and coordinate care between doctors, nurses, and patients. When the hospital extended that support to patients managing cancer, diabetes, and other conditions, Ollon joined to expand the existing architecture on a tight timeline. On the backend, Ollon's work centered on the GraphQL layer, keeping data consistent for the front end while enforcing OAuth based permissions on every request, so each new feature only exposed the data a given user was cleared to see. This let Humber River extend Healix to a much broader patient population within its original timeline.

Team augmentation and staff scaling

Humber River Hospital needed to expand Healix quickly, and the same point of contact who staffs Ollon's other engagements assembled a team for the work, combining Ollon developers with contractors from other sources. Ollon's developers joined that existing team, working alongside the assembled group on shared platform features without permanent ownership of specific modules. This model let Humber River add development capacity through a group already used to collaborating together, keeping the hospital's expansion of Healix moving on schedule.

Identity and Access Management (IAM)

As Healix grew to support more patient groups, care teams, and features beyond its original COVID tracking scope, managing who could access which parts of the platform became more complex. As part of that expansion, Ollon's backend team integrated OAuth to handle identity verification and access permissions across the system. That work sat alongside the platform's other new features, giving Humber River a consistent way to control access across Healix as more patient facing capabilities came online, without requiring a separate system for managing user identity.
